Of Necks, Trunks and Tails: Axial Skeletal Diversity among Vertebrates
نویسندگان
چکیده
The axial skeleton of all vertebrates is composed individual units known as vertebrae. Each vertebra has anatomical attributes, yet they can be classified in five different groups, namely cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and caudal, according to shared characteristics their association with specific body areas. Variations vertebral number, size, morphological features distribution amongst the regions column are a major source diversity observed among vertebrates. In this review I will discuss impact those variations on anatomy vertebrate species provide insights into genetic origin some remarkable traits that often serve classify phylogenetic branches or species, like long trunks snakes necks giraffes.

Extraordinary diversity of chemosensory receptor gene repertoires among vertebrates.
Chemosensation (smell and taste) is important to the survival and reproduction of vertebrates and is mediated by specific bindings of odorants, pheromones, and tastants by chemoreceptors that are encoded by several large gene families. This review summarizes recent comparative genomic and evolutionary studies of vertebrate chemoreceptor genes. It focuses on the remarkable diversity of chemorece...
متن کاملRetroviral diversity and distribution in vertebrates.
We used the PCR to screen for the presence of endogenous retroviruses within the genomes of 18 vertebrate orders across eight classes, concentrating on reptilian, amphibian, and piscine hosts. Thirty novel retroviral sequences were isolated and characterized by sequencing approximately 1 kb of their encoded protease and reverse transcriptase genes. Isolation of novel viruses from so many dispar...
متن کاملphylogeography and genetic diversity of the lesser mouse- eared bat (myotis blythii) in iran
in current study, 63 samples of bat populations collected from differ regions were used for evaluating the geographic variations. twenty cranial and dental characters for traditional morphometric and landmarks method on the ventral, dorsal skull and mandible for geometry morphometric studies were used. statistical analyses of traditional morphometric and geometry morphometric data indicated low...
Transpiration-induced axial and radial tension gradients in trunks of Douglas-fir trees.
We determined the axial and radial xylem tension gradients in trunks of young Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) trees. Axial specific conductivity (k(s-a)) and sap flux density (Js) were measured at four consecutive depths within the sapwood at a stem height of 1 m. By definition, at a given position in the bole, Js is a function not only of k(s-a) but also of the driving force...
